When it comes to matters concerning the environment and our natural resources I can get stoked in a heartbeat. For sixty years I’ve been a witness to unbridled growth and exploitation in the name of economics (MONEY). I also have to admit that early on in my business career I was a party to and participant in the growth/development trend.
For decades now we’ve listened to politicians and their business wonk associates talk endlessly about how to foster growth and subsequent prosperity in the Sunshine state, while thousands of innocent “settlers” pour across our borders every month, adding to the demand for more infrastructure and more public services with attendant facilities.
Today, Florida has over four times the population of 50 years ago. The water supply dwindles annually under the watchful eye of Management District regulators. Protection is enacted then deterioration is blatantly ignored by all state agencies financed by the Florida legislature. Over and over and over again.
And then? Wells go dry or turn into saltwater. Nitrogen levels skyrocket in our sacred springs and adjacent watersheds. Biodiversity, disappears in our lakes and streams replaced by algae blooms, nutrient fueled invasive plants and harbingers of total collapse such as exploding populations of leeches and nutrient filter feeders such as shad .
In Florida all rivers run to saltwater, eventually. While flows are interdicted by aquifer depletion, unchecked withdrawals, and piss poor management practices, government from town to state still salivates over the next Disney or thousand acre housing development. Now, saltwater pushes inland on the coastal riverine systems, killing once verdant plant life and associated animal species.
If freshwater ills weren’t bad enough, all this crap and conniption is further aggravated in our coastal estuarial habitats where irreversible damage is on a parallel with inland collapse.
Today fortunately, technically revived aquaculture, tourism/ecotourism, and outdoor sports recreation embraces many resident’s livelihoods who in turn, represent the core to an emerging awareness that things are not right or rosy here in paradise. As more and more people find their personal space, wellbeing, and future security threatened the outcry of real concern gets traction.
What’s the answer? Set asides such as the pending state constitutional amendment which continues land acquisitions started with the Florida Forever program years ago; Initiation of quantifiable building moratoriums and popular acknowledgement of the fact that our carrying capacity is at its max - - - - no more people!
Enuff said? . . . . . . Hardly.
UNUSUAL FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A few weeks back I found out about one of the most unique book ideas I could ever have imagined. This is a remembrance of the Holocaust that has six million words - - - - - - all the same one, “Jew”. 1250 pages filled with line after line of the word “Jew”. Page after page of this single identifier that represents the faceless, nameless, ageless, individual victims of mankind’s most evil era. The book is thought provoking, to say the least, and evocative in innumerable ways. Just think about it for a few minutes.
Conceived by a Jewish teacher/ scholar, Phil Chernofsky, and published in a limited edition of 5,000 copies, the publisher says that it sells for $60 to $90 a volume. I wonder if it’s on Amazon?
HE’S JUST SO HARD TO IGNORE !
The U.S. Emperor is such a mover and shaker it is difficult not to tune in for the daily dose of executive fiat. Some of you used to think that in life, you can’t have it both ways. Well, you’ll need to examine the Obama life to date ‘cause in his world you can if . you’re the head of state of the world’s most powerful country. He got his way, and the collective rubber stamp that used to be defined as the Congress, didn’t even read the tome passed by them as law. He got his way. When the foundation started to crack, he changed the law to divert collapse. He got his way. Pressure from money interests began to mount. He changed the dates for implementation. He got his way. It’s the law, people! It can only be changed by consent. That silly old Constitution is such an aggravation when you’re trying to help the average American.
He makes promises he says he didn’t make or he didn’t mean that way. He lets the most imperious agency in our government have a pass for invading the privacy of, and harassing, our citizens. He got his way. Nothing was done. People who served this government have died needlessly. He promised but in the end did nothing about it. He got his way, anyway.
One word thought - - -IMPEACHMENT. If not, the next president will be worse.
In the house leadership lounge the wishy-washy slosh of opinion poll-itis is going to drown some pretend conservatives. Immigration reform is like all the other smoke screens these mental giants float for us daily. There is no such thing as Immigration reform. This is like painting the barn so that the neighbors won’t know it’s falling down.
Ann Coulter; I don’t like what she says usually, but then she manages to get right on track enough to make me watch in anticipation. Here’s today’s gem: http://www.humanevents.com/
