Warning: If you don’t like what I have to say, don’t come here and hang out until you find yourself. If you weren't looking for yourself in the first place, you wouldn't come here looking for my version of you.
My reader base is expanding. For the benefit of those who are fortunate to live in a civilized world, a brief explanation for the disproportionate amount of "Inglis" conversation here is called for.
Inglis, Florida is located on the north, central, Gulf coast. Approximately 1,200 people live here. 960, plus or minus, are registered to vote. Less than a third normally do. Twenty five percent of the properties on our tax role have assessed values that are so low they pay no real estate taxes. I am an elected commissioner of this town. I have come to know how incredibly selfish and divisive a handful of childish adults can be, simply because they can't have their way.
This is a bell ringer of serious cultural change for the greatest country on earth. Inglis is probably not as unique as it seems. However, there are a number factors at work here. A lot of crap to peel back. Insidious. A mirror of what has infected our great country. It is a warning about how we will lose our freedoms, our character and our democracy. The process is well under way. We are teaching our children to be anarchists.
It’s a new year.
Welcome to Inglis. Drive west on Follow That Dream Parkway and you enter a different world. This popular notion from a wild, innocent and joyful period of our national past, is actually worn, decrepit and a huge distance from malls, shopping districts and tourist’s destinations. Shuttered and skeletal buildings are the artifacts of local prosperity. It costs too much these days to keep up appearances.
Take a turn off the “parkway” for a little local color. Decency is surrounded by irresponsibility, shabbiness and an unbelievable collection of junk, boat hulls, car skeletons and a representation of what “crap and conniption” surely means. Property values have no chance in this “community”. Pride is a code word for some bastardized idea regarding area history. If you get a lecture on “how things have always been” from a local, the things you hear, and then what you see here, won’t seem quite as absurd. Crazy and stupid don’t surrender easily.
If you’re headed towards Yankeetown, or just site seeing, after the first few blocks you find yourself looking directly at the highway in front. That subconscious reversion to tunnel vision is because the road shoulders look like Times Square two hours after New Years. Follow that Dream turns into Follow that Nightmare about two blocks in.
The dog and I walk a portion of this road, west and back, four to five times a week. I have never seen anyone but public works people picking up trash. You can tell that doesn’t happen with any frequency.
Inglis in particular has a very vociferous handful of citizens who don’t want any change except having their way. This parkway with the Elvis vibe epitomizes that attitude perfectly. Want to live and act like a pig? You’ve come to the right place.
Since I took office I have learned some amazing things about people and about myself.
I was a poser for a good part of my adult life. Like the old adage, it takes one to know one. Recognition of afflicted personality traits is a tough one unless you’ve been there. I drank. . .to excess. Then I sobered up and discovered that I was just another asshole kidding myself as an excuse.
Posing is the manifestation of what you think you have to be, verses what you perceive yourself to be. An improved version that some little gremlin (i.e. read Satan) in your head has convinced you is the real you. All it needs is a little tweaking from time to time to validate the pretense. Acting, by the way, is a hellava lot easier than dealing with real life. That’s because you can put your own spin on reality and make it yours even if it doesn’t belong to you. But it has its pitfalls. It needs fuel for the energy expended. Addiction is the gremlin’s answer to that. Drugs, alcohol, domination, power trips of abuse. Get caught in the act? Not a problem. A quick apology or a quick high and the gremlin wipes the slate clean. The ever expanding character of the “big lie” is the trickiest to manage and the most demanding of the poser’s pretense.
I have now seen someone who gets tattoos and wears costume hats to help substantiate their posing claim that they can’t prove by fact. I have witnessed another, who has campaigned for the dissolution of our town for the last six months, morph into a benign candidate for office who professes universal consideration, participation in a campaign for the betterment of the community, and “reasonable” political debate. When asked he dodged the dissolution question. He did it with a straight face and the questioner let him have a pass without another word except “Thank You”. It would have been nice to hear some honesty for a change (silly me). She should have said, “Thank you for all that you have done to destroy the town, abuse the town staff and waste as much money as humanly possible for legal fees, record requests, and sundry other specious demands. This friends, was an instantaneous transformation. A Golden Glob (sic) moment. A rat snake crossed with a chameleon. I will put the recording of this comedy act next to Cosby’s Noah album, in my all-time favorites collection. And when and if, this poser gets elected, I will mark my calendar for the expected date of betrayal - - - the town's dissolution.
And finally, the biggest poser disappointment of my short political “life” in Inglis, Florida: Someone who I respected for their kind demeanor and especially for their ministry centered on God’s word. This is an otherwise intelligent person who has spent several thousand dollars a year advocating for the Lord and the sacred tenants represented by the bible’s content in the local news excuse. He and his wife signed on for my recall. No, they don’t live in a mobile home. You hear "hypocrites" used a lot, but you don't get to see one face to face every day. God, forgive them.
That is probably not enuff said . . . from the evidence it is probably not worth saying. A colossal waste of time and energy, for a place that apparently doesn’t deserve caring about because its citizens don't care about it.
Ann Coulter takes an objective look at liberal manipulation of the truth about racial justice.
“Democrats are demanding race quotas for arrests. To hell with due process. If we can stop just one thing that never happened from ever happening again, it will have been worth it.” To read the entire article
